And one has a name.

So recently I set out to name some of my more popular, and most often requested, styles of pens, to try to make it easier for people to order from me.  It could also act as a starting point – “I want this pen, but with these mods.”

After a lot of thought and reading about Isaac Newton and all of his work, and the scientific work and research of many many others, and not really coming up with any good ideas, it was suggested on my facebook page that I name the pens after the scholarship recipients.  …Brilliant!  So that’s what I decided to do.  This is all for the kids after all, so what better way to name the pens, than after the kids.

After giving out two scholarships May 20 at graduation, speaking in front of a couple thousand people, my hands shaking so badly they looked blurry to me (thank goodness the podium hid that), I got a name from one of the two students.  I had told him to pick out one of the pens and to name it.  It could be his first or last name, a nickname, whatever…

Here I present to you –

Scholarship for 2014 graduates!

It’s that time again – and here’s the newest pen for the .  It’s made from a celluloid that was given to me about a year ago, and I haven’t been sure what I wanted to do with it until today.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and I’ll get back with you asap.
This purchase is not tax deductible.

Thanks.

OH!  And since summer is here, every pen you buy will have a portion of the money sent directly into the scholarship fund to join the money made from raffling pens off each month.  This will help to grow the scholarship and help more students achieve their college goals.  Each scholarship recipient will get a pen and a couple bottles of ink of course.  🙂
$20 from each sale will be sent to the scholarship fund.

I also mentioned that I wanted to make the scholarship available nationwide.  Here’s the application.  🙂

Shop set up and campgrounds

Here’s a shot of the entire shop (mostly) after all has been set up and organized pretty well.  Little desk at bottom left was made with scraps of my old work bench – has nib tuning/grinding stuff and a little laptop.  Metal lathe and wood lathe on right.  Wood lathe is pretty much just being used for the buffing wheel now.  Makes quick work of polishing those pens.  It’s such a pleasure to work in here now.

The next few days we’ll be gone camping.  So I won’t be answering emails until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

I also uploaded a couple new videos of the metal lathe in action here.

School is out, Summer is here, and I’m going to be one busy pen making fool.  🙂  I’m very excited to get some work done.

Have a great summer everybody!

Metal Lathe is up and going!

That’s right! I got the metal lathe going! And it’s freaking awesome!

No idea what I’m talking about? Then read this great page all about metal lathes (view article here) so you can understand why I’m so excited.

:)

I have ONE little boring bar that a buddy gave me to play with – the same guy who loaned me his engine hoist to get the lathe up on the stand. He’s got a 50 year old metal lathe in his shop that he uses to turn stuff round. Cool guy, has a million ideas for cool lathe projects too, so talking to him is always fun.

Speaking of, here are my first two pens done up on the new lathe. The sections were done on the wood lathe, b/c the metal lathe was still on the floor at the time. :) I need more tooling to be able to make a section the way I’ll want, I’m sure.

These are both student pens, by the way.

This is so much fun! I did both barrels and caps in just a couple of hours tonight. :D

Scholarships went out!!

Yeeha!  I gave the two scholarships out tonight.  I only stuttered once when I lost my place, but I did great!  😀  My hands were shaking like MAD, but nobody could see that behind the podium.  That felt really good to give those out.

I also just BARELY finished two pens tonight, before graduation, for those two kids.
