And the winner chose this!

This month instead of one pen going out – there will be TWO to ONE winner.  So far you’ve all raised $3194 to give away to several lucky students!  Thank you all so much!  And the year is only half done!  😀

One pen made by myself, and the other a pen donated by a friend from FPN specifically for the scholarship.  Thanks!
One winner – two pens.

What will I be making?  I don’t know – that’s up to the winner.  The only restriction is that it needs to be made from one of these cool materials shown below.  Well – you don’t HAVE to pick one of these – but they sure are pretty.  🙂  If you do choose any of these, there are size restrictions due to the diameter of some of the rods.  We’ll discuss that once there’s a winner.  😉

Here they are…

First up – a couple of Italian acrylics.  Blue Cowrie and Venetian Gold.december raffle (4)

Then some Sheaffer rods!  These are leftovers from the Balance II pens Sheaffer made in the late 90s.  Marbled Amber Glow, Marbled Cobalt Glow, and Jungle Green.december raffle (5)

Sheaffer Tiger Eye.december raffle (6)

I don’t know what to call these except awesome.  Black and white chunk casein, Tiffany casein, and yellow and green casein.  Or maybe tan and green?  There’s only a little bit of each of these and we’re limited with what can be made, but we’ll discuss that when somebody wins.  😉december raffle (1)

And here’s one I think will look cool.  It’s a new black and sand ripple ebonite.  This can be paired with black, or with solid sand for really cool effect either way.  december raffle (2)

And I even have a tiny bit of purple web celluloid left over.  🙂december raffle (3)

What’s that second pen?  An Edison Pearl in purple web celluloid.

Very Cool!  Here it is.

It comes with a 1.1 two tone steel nib.  Just got word from Brian Gray – if you don’t want the 1.1, he’ll swap you nibs at no charge! Thanks Brian!

AND – another nib has been donated by the same wonderful guy who gave me this pen. So it will come with two nibs! The second is a .8 stub ground by Pendleton Brown.

Rules are the same as before –

The nib choice is totally up to the winner as well.  You can choose steel, any tip size, any grind, or 18k gold, any tip size, any grind.  The winner will have the option of taking the gold nib with the cost coming out of the  winnings, paying for the gold nib, or taking a steel nib.

Website Revamp!

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally did it.

I revamped most of the website.  The ordering process is a bit different, as is the layout of the model lineup.  I spent some time today splitting up the different styles into their own categories.

Check it out.  Everything is in the drop down menu titled The Newton Pens.

To order all you need to do is click on the model you like and fill out a short form beneath the images.

Hopefully streamlining everything like this will make browsing and ordering much easier.

Thanks for all your support over the last two years!

I’ve still got lots to add, so stay tuned.

Warmest regards,
Shawn

Pen Vocabulary

Here you can see the various parts of a pen and the names for each part.
This may help when we’re talking about your pen.

The nipple on the back of the housing is the part that the converter fits to.  I’m often asked to make pens with vintage nibs to take converters but the problem with this is that they don’t have a nipple.  The nipple helps with flow by creating capillary action from the converter into the feed to the nib.  If you cut the nipple off the feed above and tried to write with it, you would experience some skipping and poor performance.  The feed nipple inside the housing nipple is very important to flow.

001

The barrel shoulder, or the step, is what the cap lip seals against.

008

010

The inner shoulder is where the lip of the section seals inside the cap.  This helps keep it from drying out.  On some models the cap lip is where the seal is made.

Problems with  your parts.

If you commonly remove your nib unit for cleaning be very careful not to over tighten.  Doing so can possibly stress the housing and create a small crack.  There may be instances where the housing is never removed but still cracks.  Sometimes these things just happen, but luckily, not very often.

2014 Scholarship – November

Here’s the next pen up.

I can’t believe I didn’t mention before – if you win the and this pen doesn’t strike your fancy, you can have a custom made up just for you.  😉

It’s a slim 45 Series Elizabethan with a #6 nib.  These pens are JUUUUST big enough for the #6 nib.  🙂  Looks good too.

The white ends are made from a creamy alternate ivory acrylic and the barrel material is some of Bob’s Alumilite.  I started turning this one yesterday morning just to see how it would turn out and I have to say I’m blown away.  So It’s going to be a pen.

The nib choice is totally up to the winner.  You can choose steel, any tip size, any grind, or 14k or 18k gold, any tip size, any grind.  The winner will have the option of taking the gold nib with the cost coming out of the  winnings, paying for the gold nib, or taking a steel nib.

So if all that sounds good then you can buy as many as you want payable through paypal to newtonpensscholarships@gmail.com.  Be sure not to send payment to my other email address.

If you have any questions at all please contact me at [email protected], or ask here in the comments section.  Please be sure to send payment to the correct paypal address or it may get lost.

4th – 2014 Newton Pens Scholarship

#4 got it!  Congrats to whoever is #4!!  Yeeha!  You get a pen and a kid gets some help going to college!  Thanks!!

That’s right – I haven’t even made it yet.  🙂  The section is black phenolic resin, and the rest of the pen is up to you.  I was thinking of a nice straight seamless, like this one, but it will be up to the winner of course.  🙂  If black isn’t your thing, pick whatever material you like.

The nib choice is totally up to the winner as well.  You can choose steel, any tip size, any grind, or 14k or 18k gold, any tip size, any grind.  The winner will have the option of taking the gold nib with the cost coming out of the  winnings, paying for the gold nib, or taking a steel nib.  The response to the last was so huge that I think this is how I’ll run it each time.

If you have any questions at all please contact me at [email protected], or ask here in the comments section.  Please be sure to send payment to the correct paypal address or it may get lost.

ends 9pm central US time, Sunday, October 13, 2013.  Not tax deductible.
