Shipping Options

Your Newton pen can come to you a couple different ways.

US shipping: USPS Priority insured.  Prices range from $12-26 or so.  You may pick USPS Express if you want it and I’ll figure out the cost.

International shipping: UPS uninsured, $40-60 or so.

Every Newton pen comes in a handmade cloth pen sleeve.  You also have the option of getting this travel mug with your pen in it. With this you you can enjoy that perfect cup of coffee, or relaxing cup of tea (or Bloody Mary) while writing and drawing away with your Newton pen.

The travel mug is a $15 option.  If you don’t want a mug, the pen will be shipped in a heavy kraft tube.  I use shredded chipboard (boxes from the grocery store for example) or balled up newspaper as packing material instead of bubble wrap.

May pen give-away, and a new year of fundraising begins!

Good Morning!

It’s that time again and I am very happy to announce two winners this month.  First winner for May is David P, who got #10.  David gets a $225 credit towards a custom Newton Pen.

Second winner – the winner of the Thomas Hall Shinobi-

is Andrew C.!  I picked from 1-12 (months of the year) and got 2 for February, and then picked from 1-40 from February’s entries, and #7 was picked.  I used Random.org for all number picking.

Thanks again to all of you for all the donations and postcard purchases.  We raised $780 in the month of May, for a total of $6280 this year!  We’re giving out 6 one thousand dollar scholarships.  And the local paper printed a blurb about our scholarships!  So cool!  The two names they didn’t print were kids from outside of Arkansas.

New Pens and Shows and…

My wife Elizabeth and I drove east to Atlanta last weekend for the show and had such a great time.  We met and hung out with new friends and old and had so many laughs.  If you’ve never been to a pen show before don’t delay.  It’s such a great experience.

Brad Dowdy of The Pen Addict was there and did a live podcast.  Ana of The Well Appointed Desk joined him and Myke Hurly at the mic.  Here’s the podcast we all heard live.  Anna has several links reporting on the show and I encourage you to go through and read all of them.

Elizabeth brought her pen wraps and sleeves to the show and didn’t bring many back home after.  We had such a great time and plan to come back next year.  Thanks so much for all of your support!

Now I’d like to introduce two new models.  I had these on display at the show and the reception to them was incredible.  My good buddy Jonathan Brooks took one of them home for some interesting urushi finishing.  I can’t wait to see how that turns out.

First up is the Temple.  This pen’s name, like most of my models, is inspired by historical places here in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  Maxine’s is a bar and venue today, but has a pretty colorful history.  Maxine Temple Jones was the owner of it for many years, running it as a hotel, and according to many of the locals, as a brothel.

The Temple has 8 facets and can post.  No clip on this but would look great with an urushi finish.  Starts at $425.

The next pen I want to introduce is the Vapor.  This little pen gets its name from The Vapors night club here in Hot Springs.  It hasn’t been a night club in decades, most recently a church called The Tower of Strength, but the history is still there and quite interesting.

The Vapor has 8 facets but is seamless when closed.  Cannot be posted.  No clip on this but would look great with an urushi finish.  Starts at $425.

The Deadline approaches

The deadline to apply for our Newton Pens Scholarships is coming to a close.  If you want to apply, or you know a high school student who could use a little financial help, now is the time to do it.  As long as I get your essay emailed to me by the deadline listed, April 1st, your application packet can be a few days late.

If you have ANY questions about it, please email me.  [email protected]

Thanks!

Keeping things lined up

If you have a Shinobi, Prospector, or Breaker, and you find the nib isn’t lining up with the proper side of the barrel anymore, it could be caused by a couple of things:

  1. Over tightening the section into the barrel, or over tightening the cap to the barrel.
  2. Taking the nib unit out every time you clean it and eventually wearing out the threads on the nib unit.

On older pens, I tried to compensate for thread wear by working the nib unit into the section several times, and I did the same with the section into the barrel, before finishing the pen.  Doing this helped to eliminate misalignment later on, but I never know how much torque people may apply to their pens when putting them back together.

To avoid misalignment be sure not to over tighten the section into the barrel, and do not unscrew your nib unit for cleaning.  It really isn’t necessary, and with pens where alignment is important to the look of the pen, could eventually cause misalignment.

If you do have misalignment issues, what I can do is send you an ebonite nib unit.

Ebonite nib units

I’m providing ebonite nib units with all Shinobi, Prospector, and Breaker pens from now on (April 2020), or as long as I’m able to keep buying them.

This allows the nib and feed to be oriented in any position so that the top of the nib lines up with the pen barrel in just the right way.  I do not recommend pulling nib and feed for regular cleaning as this might result in a loose fit, and a drippy or poor writing pen.  I don’t recommend pulling the converter unless it breaks b/c the fit between nib unit nipple and converter is extremely tight.  In fact I have to sand the nipple down a little so a converter will even fit on it.  This is a very thin area and might possibly maybe break if you’re not extremely careful.

The more I’ve used these housings the less likely I think it will be that you could break the nipple off unless you’re very heavy handed or have an accident.

Again – I don’t recommend you take these apart unless it’s completely necessary, or the converter fails.
