$6000 – 2014 Newton Pens Scholarship

So close! Ends tomorrow night and the fund is at $5961 and I just received an email from an absolute saint who said that if I don’t meet my goal, he’d donate the money to help me reach it!  I’m so incredibly grateful for this and all the other donations that have been given.  You all have no idea what it means to me.  I can’t wait to announce these at graduation this year.  I think there will be two or three given at Mountain Pine and a couple at other schools from around the state.  I’m so excited about this!

I could actually use another volunteer or two to go over essays and help score them.  😉

Thanks so much everybody!

April/May – Newton Pens Scholarship – last for this school year

Here it is – the last for the school year.  Whatever money is raised over the next two weeks will be included with this year’s scholarships, which by the way, are being read and scores tallied.  I should know who will be getting scholarships in a couple of weeks.  🙂

This month – let’s keep it simple – just two winners.  First winner will get a custom pen of their choice from Newton Pens.

The second winner will get a couple of pens that were donated to me just for the , and another from me.  The two donated pens are a Ratnamson 302 and a baby mini, both e/d fill..  The pen donated by me is a Camlin e/d.

All you have to do to enter is send $10 via paypal to [email protected] and I’ll respond with a number according to what order you got in.  If you’re the 3rd person, you’ll be #3, if you’re the 33rd person, you’ll be #33.  Simple right?  At the end of the two weeks I’ll use a random number picker and the first two numbers picked will get a prize!

will run from Monday April 28 until Sunday May 11, 2014.

If you have any questions please ask.  If I forgot anything please let me know!  🙂

Here’s a load of cool materials that I have available, plus lots more in the shop, for that lucky winner.

March Winner!!

Thanks to everybody who participated – and a huge thanks to the two very kind folks who contributed $400 total!  Thanks so much!

Remember – half of the money brought in from will go to prom to help my juniors pay for prom this year.

Two pen winners, a bottle of ink, and two really awesome mechanical pencils.

And the winners are….

Custom pen number one – #27

Custom pen number two – #3

First choice of ink or pencils – #46

Second choice – #37

And last but not least – #21

Thanks so much everybody!

Donkey Basketball, the Circus, Spring Break, and a Winner!

Hi Everybody!

This has been a very busy week for me and most of it has been spent recovering from donkey basketball.  I don’t know if you’ve ever played basketball on a donkey, but I wouldn’t recommend it.  Some of them don’t care to be ridden.  At least the donkey that I was given didn’t.  A couple of the players had no problems at all.  Their donkeys were like little horses: happy to please.  “You wanna ride over here?  Sure thing.  Let’s go.”  Mine?  No no – mine were angry, terrible beasts.  One stepped on my foot.  They both bucked and kicked as soon as they thought I would be jumping on.  The second donkey I had ran the entire time and all I did was hold on for the ride.  A terrible ride.

So terrible that I’m still hurting from the whole ordeal.
There are videos too – somewhere on facebook – of me almost on a donkey and then being thrown off, landing on my side.  I got up quick, but it hurt… every time…  🙂

Last night I took my family to a small circus – a first for my kids and my wife.  🙂  And it was so much fun!  Dancing tigers, dogs and llamas, elephants, jugglers, all sorts of performers… just really glad there were no donkeys.  The kids’ favorite part was the finale: the fire breather!  Corbin said he wants to do that when he grows up.  The hardest part for me to watch was the aerial ribbon dancing and high trapeze act.  No nets!

So Spring Break is over – back to school on Monday – and a drawing tonight!  If you haven’t got in yet, now is your chance.  There will be two pens this month given away – one for the scholarship fund, and another to help my junior class with prom, along with a few other smaller prizes.  I’ll pick winners tonight around 9pm.

Thanks!

Deadline for and for the love of donkeys!

Hi Everybody!

So normally I give each at least two weeks run time, usually with a day or two added on so it ends on a weekend.  This time I goofed…
Two weeks from March 14th would be the 28th, not the 23rd like I had posted originally – so we’ll run this to the 30th!  That will give more people more time to participate.  I knew it didn’t sound right before.  😉

And this time around a couple of amazing and generous folks have donated $400 to the scholarship fund!  This puts the fund up to $5496 total so far!  I can’t wait to get those checks written out!  🙂

And I’ll be riding a donkey to basketball glory this Saturday afternoon!  Wish me luck!  But, don’t say “break a leg”.  🙂

Warmest regards,
Shawn

March – Newton Pens Scholarship! – & Prom

March 2014 !

Before I delay any more, I’m going to just start it.  🙂

This month, as always, you can win a custom pen by me.

Your choice model (or your own design?), material, nib and grind.

One extra pen will be made as a fund raiser for the Jr. Class at my school.  So there will be two custom pen winners this month!  Half the money from this will go towards the Jr. Class at my school to help pay for prom this year – that’s why two custom pens.  🙂

You could also win a mostly full bottle of P.W. Akkerman ink that I have.  KoninginneNach-Blauw.  One of the big bottles which are becoming a bit desirable now that they won’t be available anymore.

Also up for grabs – two mechanical pencils.  Left: A Super Promecha .4mm, retractable sleeve and adjustable lead advance.  Very nice pencil.  Feels so great in the hand.
Right: Mitsubishi Uni .3mm, fixed sleeve, nice grip.

Shows andScholarships

A lot has been going on this last week and I’m not terribly great at telling a story, so I’ll just jump right in.  🙂

The Arkansas pen show was Friday and saturday. I only had a couple of pens with me, but lots of parts and pieces, wraps that my wife made, and boxes that my friend Jere made. I was set up for show and tell and had a great time with it. I got a commission and sold a few wraps and a box. I also had 10 Vanness 75th Anniversary pens to show off.

I also picked up some really cool pencils. I found an old 1920s Wahl, a 1920s Sheaffer, and a huge box of old pencils I picked up for my classroom. Sure, the erasers are hard as rocks, but they draw just fine. 🙂 I also found a couple cool nibs. One lucky curve nib still in the section with feed in great shape and a Lamy 2000 broad nib. I thought that was pretty cool.

We also got to see a very interesting and TINY little pen.  Henry Simpole brought along a Waterman’s 00 (or Doll?) safety pen.  Can’t remember the name exactly.  Whatever the name, there are not too many of those around.  Looked even smaller in Andrew’s hands!

I talked with several people about my scholarship, too. March first was the deadline for this years scholarship and I received 27 applications. I’m very grateful to the people who have volunteered to help read through them all and help pick the recipients. I’m hoping to raise some more money this year before graduation so that we’re able to help more kids with their college expenses.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to all who have helped support this work.  🙂
