The Deadline approaches

The deadline to apply for our Newton Pens Scholarships is coming to a close.  If you want to apply, or you know a high school student who could use a little financial help, now is the time to do it.  As long as I get your essay emailed to me by the deadline listed, April 1st, your application packet can be a few days late.

If you have ANY questions about it, please email me.  [email protected]

Thanks!

Keeping things lined up

If you have a Shinobi, Prospector, or Breaker, and you find the nib isn’t lining up with the proper side of the barrel anymore, it could be caused by a couple of things:

  1. Over tightening the section into the barrel, or over tightening the cap to the barrel.
  2. Taking the nib unit out every time you clean it and eventually wearing out the threads on the nib unit.

On older pens, I tried to compensate for thread wear by working the nib unit into the section several times, and I did the same with the section into the barrel, before finishing the pen.  Doing this helped to eliminate misalignment later on, but I never know how much torque people may apply to their pens when putting them back together.

To avoid misalignment be sure not to over tighten the section into the barrel, and do not unscrew your nib unit for cleaning.  It really isn’t necessary, and with pens where alignment is important to the look of the pen, could eventually cause misalignment.

If you do have misalignment issues, what I can do is send you an ebonite nib unit.

Ebonite nib units

I’m providing ebonite nib units with all Shinobi, Prospector, and Breaker pens from now on (April 2020), or as long as I’m able to keep buying them.

This allows the nib and feed to be oriented in any position so that the top of the nib lines up with the pen barrel in just the right way.  I do not recommend pulling nib and feed for regular cleaning as this might result in a loose fit, and a drippy or poor writing pen.  I don’t recommend pulling the converter unless it breaks b/c the fit between nib unit nipple and converter is extremely tight.  In fact I have to sand the nipple down a little so a converter will even fit on it.  This is a very thin area and might possibly maybe break if you’re not extremely careful.

The more I’ve used these housings the less likely I think it will be that you could break the nipple off unless you’re very heavy handed or have an accident.

Again – I don’t recommend you take these apart unless it’s completely necessary, or the converter fails.

Scholarships, Postcards, Pen Prizes

Hi Everybody!  It’s time to announce the winner of the free custom pen for February!  This month we had 40 entries, and from those the winner is #20, John M.  Congrats!

We have raised $4016.60 so far for scholarships this year, $348 of that just this month.  Thank you all so much for your participation.

Remember, to enter the drawing and to help support the scholarship fund, all you have to do is buy a set of postcards, or you can enter for free by following the rules here.

POSTCARDS

We just got in three new sets of postcards that I’m very proud of.  These aren’t just student art cards though; these images were donated by artists from all around the world.  I’m still putting together another set or two with more student art, so keep your eyes peeled.

The images were chosen by myself and the other members of the Newton Pens Scholarship board.  Thanks to everybody who donated and gave us permission to use their art.  We really appreciate it.

First is Set #2016-2 has art from a Lakeside HS student, illustrator Jamison Odone, a photo from Preeda Dulyachinda, the famous Leigh Reyes, and fountain pen lover and community supporter Matthew Morse.

Next is Set #2016-1 has art by HSU ceramics professor Aaron Calvert (who was very gracious when he passed me from Ceramics II), L.A.-based artist Joey Feldman, Leigh Reyes, Matthew Morse, and French artist Phil Gil.

Finally we have the City Series.  These were taken in New York and London by HSU professor David Stoddard.

These will be easily available to purchase from the postcard page.

Remember, by purchasing postcards you are automatically entered to win Thomas Hall’s first Shinobi in a grand drawing to be held at the end of May.

I have two more special prizes that were donated by Karas Kustoms for two winners for the March drawing.  The only things you’ll need to pick are what color material you want your section made from and the nib point.

karas (3)  karas (1)

You can see the pens were donated without nibs and sections.

Remember, to enter the drawing and to help support the scholarship fund, all you have to do is buy a set of postcards, or you can enter for free by following the rules here.

As always, if you have any questions about any of this at all, please send me an email.

Newton Pens Scholarship Update – February

Newton Pens Scholarships raised $534.68 in the month of January, and had 67 entries!  Wow it’s been a busy month.  Thank you all so much for your support.  And a huge thanks to Brad Dowdy at The Pen Addict for mentioning us on his podcast last month.  In total we have raised $4016.60 for the year.  Thanks so much!  Every penny will be given at the end of the school year to deserving high school students going to college.

The winner of the free pen this month goes to #10, Kathi D.!  Congrats to Kathi!

When you enter the drawings by purchasing postcards or sending a note in through the mail, from January to the end of May, you will have a chance to win Thomas Hall’s first Shinobi.

The monthly drawing will still continue as it always has, with somebody winning a custom pen each month, but at the end of May, all of the numbers will be picked through again, with somebody winning the Shinobi.  And as I normally do, it will come with any steel nib and any grind you like.  If you want a gold nib the normal cost of $110 will apply, with a free grind if you want it.

So if you enter the drawings between January and May, you could win the Shinobi.

So that means the February drawing starts now!  If you want to enter to win a free pen, and help support the Newton Pens Scholarships, which help support high school students going to college, all you have to do is buy some postcards, or send a note.  Read the rules here.

And it’s time to start sending in those scholarship applications! If you know any high school students who could benefit from a few extra dollars, please let them know about this scholarship.  I’m about to get in contact with my local schools and let them know to start sending those applications in.

I could use a few more volunteers to help read and score the essays, so if you might be interested, please send me a note – [email protected]

Thanks!

Site Update

Newton Pens has just had a bit of a face lift.  Everything is still here but some things are moved around a bit.

Still at the top is the navigation menu where you can see Ordering and customization options, the Model LineupRecently Finished pen photos, Inventory with a few pens for sale, and then Pen Modifications where I showcase work done to other pens.  Next is info about the Scholarships we give out every year, and how you can help.  E Newton Designs is where you can see and purchase my wife Elizabeth’s pen wraps.  Last is info About Newton Pens, how I got started making pens, and then Contact Info.  The search and follow features are now at the very bottom of the site, along with new Instagram uploads.

If you have any questions, or suggestions on making things cleaner, I’m all ears.

Thanks.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Everybody!

I want to wish you all a happy holiday season and to express my gratitude
for all the support you all have shown for the scholarships.  So far this
year we’ve raised just over $3400.  Pretty soon I’ll start reaching out for
scholarship applications from high school students all over the country and then we can start to see all of this fund raising really pay off.  🙂

If anybody wants to volunteer to read and score essays, please send me an email.  [email protected]

Thanks again to all of you so much.
Warmest regards,
Shawn and Elizabeth Newton

Something new and sculptural.

Here is a new model I’m happy to introduce.  A few people have asked recently if I’d be able to create a pen with a sort of fin on it.  I played around with a scrap piece of acrylic earlier and was pretty happy with the results.  I wanted to see how it would turn out on a whole pen.  So here it is.

20151207_094831

I think it should be named the Breaker, which is a synonym for wave.  Why waves?  The raised bits at either end of the pen remind me of waves.

It was pretty hard to photograph and still show the waves on the ends of the pen.   The material I worked with wasn’t very big to begin with so this was as big as I could make the waves on it.  Working with something like ebonite, or larger rods of acrylic would allow for larger waves.  This is made from an acrylic called Chocolate Chip.

I’m working on a price now, but if you’re interested in something like this, send me an email.

Thanks.

Newton Pens Scholarships – A winner and a new month

Hi Everybody,

We picked a winner for the October drawing.  Y. Lee, #1, got it!  He’s already picked out what he wants me to make and all he has to do now is wait.  🙂

We raised $879 in postcard sales and donations in October, which means we’ve raised $2628 to give to students!  And for all you high school kids out there, it’s time for you to start writing those essays.  You can read quite a few high scoring examples here.  If you know any high school students planning on going to college in the US, please let them know about this.

And remember:
-I created a new email address  – [email protected]
-Newton Pens is now an official 501c3, which means your donations are tax deductible.  If you want a receipt please ask so one will be given.

And since this is a new month…

During the entire month of November, if you donate or buy a pack of student art postcards you’ll automatically be entered to win a pen.  When you purchase a set of cards or donate I’ll give you a number.  Every penny raised will go towards the scholarships and support students going to college.  Yes, you can buy as many postcard packs as you want, and for each pack, you’ll get a number.

The drawings are open for all to enter, from all parts of the world.  No restrictions at all.

The raffle itself is free.  If you want to enter the raffle without supporting the scholarship or helping graduating seniors (or getting any of those cool postcards) then all you have to do is send a note in the mail to:

Shawn Newton
PO Box 6084
Hot Springs, Ar. 71902

You have to let me know in your note that you’re entering the raffle, and you have to include an email address that I can reach you at.

Everybody who enters will be given a number in the order of postcards purchased or letters received in the mail, and at the end of the month I’ll draw a number to pick the winner of a custom pen.  I use random.org as a number picker.

Raffle pens are limited to c/c filling system, steel nib of any size with any grind you want.  If you want any extra customizations, bands or rings, special filling system, gold nib, or anything else, there will be normal charges.

I will announce income for November and the winner of the custom pen near the last day of the month.
